marcus coates: follow the voice 2009 (video still)

Newlyn Art Gallery

Until 30th January, we present a solo exhibition of video and audio works by Marcus Coates.
A playful echo of Darwin's 'The Expression of Emotions in Man and Animals', Marcus Coates' new work Follow The Voice continues the artists' fascination with the unexpected kinships that exist across human, animal and material worlds. Following Darwin's own curiosity and insights into the interconnectedness of species, the video establishes striking parallels between a range of familiar man-made sounds in Darwin's birthplace Shrewsbury (including a supermarket checkout, police siren and school playground) and an equally evocative chorus of animal cries and bird calls.
Also presented are Intelligent Design featuring two Giant Tortoises filmed on the Galapagus Islands and Cadences an audio piece that loops the last notes of English pastoral classical music.

'Follow The Voice' is co-commissioned by Film and Video Umbrella with Shropshire Museums Services and funded by Arts Council England.
