Lawrence Weiner#
Lawrence Weiner (USA, 1942) is one of the most significant and iconic artists of his generation. As a pioneer of the Conceptual Art movement in the 1960's, Weiner ws among the first to propose that the idea can be poetic as the object. He uses language to convey these artistic ideas, instructions or questions. The text works in the exhibition are presented in relation to the gallery's unique location, in particular its proximity to the sea. Lawrence Weiner has also been invited to propose a temporary public work for the area in the next year, inspired by the Tidal Observatory in Newlyn Harbour. Throughout the exhibition there will be a programme of Wednesday lunchtime talks. They will focus on the role, use and importance of the Tidal Observatory, the impact of tidal surges and the regeneration and development of Newlyn's fishing community.
The exhibition has been curated and commissioned by ProjectBase in collaboration with Newlyn Art Gallery. It has been supported by Arts Council England South West and the Henry Moore Foundation. The education programme is supported by the Princes Foundation for Children and the Arts.
