Now featured in the Exchange shop for a limited period of 3 weeks only,"Excavations" by John Keys.
John has been a resident artist at the Dakhleh Oasis Archaelogical Project in the South Western desert of Egypt since 2003. "Excavations"is a series of paintings, made in this remote oasis, that explore both the landscape and materials of the desert. Created using pigments gathered by hand from the desert - layers of oxides deposited on the surface of the land by ancient aquifers, mixed with locally sourced gypsum and size.
The pieces were sanded, cracked, painted and printed onto. Layers were constantly built up and removed, as the cotton was washed and dried repeatedly. They became palimpsests, objects with history, archaelogical finds carrying traces and residues of previous times. The works gained a resonance with the landscape in which they were created; subjected to the same elemental forces of water and intense heat as the desert.
