Andy Harper
Archaeology in Reverse

6th July – 28th September 2013

Over the past decade, Andy Harper has gained critical acclaim for an extraordinary and varied body of paintings.

Harper has previously created paintings on suspended spheres, intricately cut boards and fly-posted onto hoardings. For Archaeology in Reverse he has made a specific and central work for the upper gallery around which the rest of the show will revolve; a free-standing screen, comprising large painted canvases.

The exhibition is supported by the Department of Art at Goldsmiths, University of London.

 John Newling
Ecologies of Value

20th July – 14th September 2013

This major survey exhibition presents a selection of John Newling’s work, from the 1970s to the present day.

John Newling is a pioneer of British public art, exploring religion, the natural world and the social and economic systems of society.

Works in the exhibition that play with ideas relating to money and religion include replicas of high street cash machines made in copper, large glass bowls stained with the dirt and debris cleaned from the surface of 50,000 two-pence coins and sculptures related to the act of taking communion inthe Christian church.

Newling has also produced artworks through horticultural processes. Two silver-lined hydroponic growth tents contain young Miracle Trees (Moringa oleifera), a species with uniquely generous properties for healing and nutrition. Through carefully regulated levels of light, carbon dioxide and water, the tents simulate the trees’ native climate conditions in the Himalayan foothills of north-western India.

John Newling: Ecologies of Value is a Nottingham Contemporary touring exhibition and first exhibited there 26th January - 7th April 2013.

The Picture Room 2013

The Picture Room at Newlyn Art Gallery shows monthly changing exhibitions by Cornwall based artists and presents the works for sale. With an emphasis on affordable works the Picture Room offers the opportunity to buy paintings, prints and drawings by some of the regions most recognised artists.

For 2013 we have an exciting programme of exhibitions including shows by Luke Frost, Naomi Frears, Sam Bassett, Alex Higlett and Georgina Hounsome.

Marilyn Middlemiss
3rd - 29th June
NSA artist Marilyn Middlemiss’ work draws parallels between the empty landscapes of East Yorkshire, were the artist grew up, and the space, muted tones and colour of West Penwith.

Sam Bassett
6th July – 17th August
Painted, drawn, printed and sculptural work, from small postcard-sized prints to larger paintings and objects that visualise Bassett’s thought process in a dialogue of layered text, imagery, figures and landscape.

Naomi Frears
19th August – 28th September
Showcasing smaller, intimate works that reveal her thought process and current obsessions. Based in St Ives, Frears is one of Cornwall’s foremost artists, and has exhibited both nationally and internationally.

All profits from sales made in the Picture Room directly support the Gallery’s education and exhibition activities.
