CORNFORD & CROSS
THE ABOLITION OF WORK
29TH SEPTEMBER - 18TH NOVEMBER 2007

Matthew Cornford and David Cross 2007
Since meeting at St Martins School of Arts in 1987, Matthew Cornford and David Cross have created a unique body of work in galleries and in the public realm.
In the main, their way of working has been to respond to a particular context or situation, by examining the problems that arise out of it.
For The Abolition of Work, inspired by the history of copper in the area, the artists quite literally put money into art, covering the entire gallery floor with one-penny coins. In effect, they piece together a vast puzzle, one in which all the pieces are the same and the 'picture' invites reflection on the complexities and paradoxes of the relationship between time, money and the value of work.
